DRIVE-BY POEM
(’95) Wrote this for a reading at St. Mary’s College,
up in the hills, which I read with the help of a
co-conspirator reading the “Hey, man!” part, and who
shall remain nameless, because I can’t remember who it
was!

It’s a tough cookie
this Earth,
take a bite at your own risk,
five billion & counting
& we keep on coming…
–“Hey, man!
We hungry together, no?
Life is like that,
it can do that…
sometimes you go
from verse to worse…”
Kids living & dying
on the streets,
hospitals closing,
pinkslips…
body bags here,
body bags there,
body bags everywhere!
–“Hey, man!
We hungry together, no?
Life is like that,
it can do that…
sometimes you go
from verse to worse…”
Slave labor,
slave souls,
epidemics,
helplessness,
fear…
–“Hey, man!
We hungry together, no?
Life is like that,
it can do that…
sometimes you go
from verse to worse…”
Who killed the great leaders?
Who killed José Blow?
Who killed kinky sex?
Who killed the age of innocence?
Asesinos!!
–“Hey, man!
We hungry together, no?
Life is like that…
You already said that!
–“But it can do that!
Sometimes you go
from verse to worse!”
