POEM POEMA
(the late, great FrancEye liked my “Poem Poema”
so much, that on the day I sent it to her she
corrected my translation of the name ‘Santa Cruz’,
which I called ‘Saint Cross’ instead of ‘Holy Cross’,
and she read it that night at a poetry reading she
gave in Santa Monica, so of course, I was elated.)

I’m pleased to announce
tengo el gusto de anunciar
that the Santa Cruz City Council
que el Concejo de la Ciudad de Santa Cruz
has approved an ordinance
ha aprobado una ordenanza
that changes the name of Santa Cruz
que cambia el nombre de Santa Cruz
to Holy Cross
a Holy Cross.
The reason for this is that there has been
la razón de eso es que ha habido
too much erosion of the English language
demasiado erosión del idioma inglés
and culture,
y cultura,
and we need to put a stop to it!
y necesitamos parar eso!
It seems that everything these days
parece que todo en estos días
has to be translated into Spanish
tiene que ser traducido al español
and that cannot continue!
y eso no puede continuar!
