POETRY FLASH

(back in 1998 I had the honor of sharing the stage
with Joyce Jenkins, long-time editor of POETRY FLASH,
based in the Bay Area; our reading took place at the
Santa Monica Library, moderated by none other than the
magnificent, the brilliant Steve Goldman. In my piece
I poke a little fun at Sen. Helms, noted right-winger
of that era.)

The House & the Senate
have passed,
the Jesse Helms Poetry Act.

It’s the law of the land
that, whether typed
or written by hand,
it’s now a Federal crime
to write a poem
that doesn’t rhyme.
