POP-UP POETRY

(’83 – ’18) Originally I called this piece
“RANDOM POETRY,’ – I had the nasty habit of
ambushing friends & getting them to participate
in sort of instant poems. This one I wrote with
accomplished pianist & accordionist
Ms. Ruth Judkowitz. (her lines start
with an *)

– No honey in the joint,,,
– no joint to call my own,
– only black coffee –

* Pump that chemical euphoria
* into my brain…
* keep me awake, alert,
* for the Electric Tribesmen…

– Is it true that uppers are downers?
– That nacho is but a macho with an ‘n’?

* And the busboy’s named Luís…
– and who knows, his T-shirt
– might have a hole in it too! ///

* So he can escape…
* a hole is the most perfect
* geometric shape,
– in this unique verse.

INTELLECTUAL ENCOUNTER

(’95) I’m revising around 1,200 poems I’ve written
since ’69 & hopefully I’ll have my very first book
of poems, mixed with art, at the first opportunity.
If you have a favorite or two… or a few, let me
know & I’ll include them. (I know one Kellianne
Parker likes!) – Gracias…

– Pencil meets blank page,,,
Pencil scribbles a few words,
waits from reaction from Page ///

– Pencil feels bolder,
writes a line, then another,,,
nothing can stop Pencil now…
writes this, writes that ///

– Page begins to feel used,
shouts: “Hold it, Pencil!
You’re all over me…
what do I get out of this?”

– “Why, Page, we work together,
I show you & you show the world,,,
I’m the vehicle, you’re the highway,
I’m the wave, you’re the shore!”

– Page thinks about it…
“You know,” says Page, “I guess
some of us are born to pencil,
& others are born to page.”

ON TRIAL

(’81 or ’82)

%++%+%+%+%+%++%+%+%+%++%+%+%++%++%+%_%>>

– I’m accused of being a spy
for the Kingdom of Nature,
mainly because I talk to the trees
and the trees talk to me,,,

– Am I at fault if I’m the only one
who can talk to the trees?
Am I to blame for the billions who can’t?

– I’m fluent in two tree-languages:
Pineish and Cedarish;
I also know some basic Elmish.

– I ask the prosecutor, Mr. Millsaw,
would you feel any less human
if at one time one of your ancestors,
perhaps out of loneliness,
may have fallen in love with a tree?
Where’s the crime?
are we ready to legislate love?

– Where does the fault lie?
If the tree is at fault,
should it be chopped down?

– Ladies & gentlemen of the jury,,,
yes, I talk to trees, trees talk to me.
You might’ve wondered what we talk about…
we talk about the weather,
and how things have and have not changed
from the time it was a sapling…

– We don’t talk politics, things like that –
too complicated ///

– We talk about the weather.

OPEN REDUCTION AND INTERNAL FIXATION OF THE MEDIAL MALLEOLUS

(Back in ’75 I had an operation and stayed overnight
at the hospital; somehow a copy of a surgeon’s report
got mixed in with my papers. After reading it I thought,
“Huh… I found it, so it must be a found poem!” So then
I added my own experience to it and you’ll find that
hybrid below, my words marked with an *)

* Olympic-size cauldron,
no previous experience
swallowing needles required…

* Sign your name,
fill in close relative,
paper slippers, but no knee pad
with your prayer kit,,,

PROCEDURE: Under general inhalation anesthesia the patient was
placed supine on the operating table in the usual sterile manner.
A three-inch incision was made over the posteriolateral aspect of
the fracture.

* Hand over your credit cards
and your fears ///

Care was taken to avoid the sural nerve; dissection was taken down
to the junction of the flexor halluces longus and perineus gravis
muscles.

* Feel as ant-big as you want,
(but you must wear your gown!)

Access was gained to the medial malleolus; three screws were placed
across the fragment. All blood clots were removed.

* Nothing to worry about,,,
Dr. Jekyll and the sadistic
Filipino nurse love you…

The wounds were irrigated with Bacitracin. The deep tissues were
approximated with 2-0 suture. The skin was closed with 4-0 nylon
suture. Dry sterile dressings were then applied.

* Where am I?! Is this General Hospital?!

The patient was placed in a long leg cast, tolerated the procedure
well and left the operating room in good condition.

SPONGE COUNT: correct – SURGEON: Dr. Lawrence – ANESTHETIST: Dr. Henry –
SCRUB NURSE: Ramírez.
