SO LONG, NEW YORK
(This one is No. 16 of “NEW YORK 16”,
my adventures in N.Y. back in ’83).
– – – – – – – – – – – – –
-Thanks for the happenings,
friends, relatives, people,
the poets & their poetry,
the jaywalkers, the self-mumblers,
the things that are The City…
-Thanks for organized
chaos, madness & confusion,
adrenalin for the senses,
season’s ticket
to the Theater of the Absurd…
-Thanks for the sharing,
good feeling & good books
& magazines, at the
New York Book Fair,
and meeting Arthur Winfield Knight,
sitting behind his table
among Neal & the Beats.
and the previously unpublished
Kerouac photo he gave me…
-Thanks to the mysterious forces
that keep The City alive,
vibrant, on the move,
in a rush to get there triumphant,
or just to get there…
-Rush to the train,
rush across the street,
rush behind the one that rushes…
keep rushing, New York,
that elusive intangible
is just around the concrete.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT
Hello, devoted fans out there… all seven of you.
I’ll be rejoining that social media place that
starts with a Face and ends with a Book, if you
get my driftwood. So please look for me in the
next few days and let me know your comments about
my work, marriage proposals, etc.
‘But officer, I wasn’t really
speeding, and I DEFINITELY have not deem brinking!’
AMADEUS
(This one is No. 11, of the series “New York 16,”
impressions of my visit to New York in ’83.)

-Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:
-Kurschel Listing #1-
“AMADEUS” plays at the
Broadhurst Theater,
44th St. & Broadway.
-Front row, seat 5,
angular view of the court
of Emperor Joseph II of Austria,
and the rivalry between
Antonio Salieri, court composer,
and the court’s upstart composer,
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
-David Dukes – superb as Salieri,
Mark Hamill – excellent as Mozart,
brilliant sets & costumes,
the emperor looks his part,
strong drama, lots of laughs,
the audience loves every royal put-down,
Mozart minuet, outrageous speech.
-At the end, the genius dies…
After the curtain calls
deep inside of me I heard
the plaintive melody & playful cadence,
of his violin concerto No. 5.
BIG APPLE JUICE
Went to New York in ’83… lived there once
for several years. Flying back I started
to write “NEW YORK 16” (A Poem in 16 Movements.)
This one is No. 4.
– – – – – – – – – – – – –
New York City,
growth industry
for dealers of dreams
& tragedies.
City of hustlers
of various denominations,
of poets, artists, actors, jugglers,
and other survival freaks.
Epicenter to the 9th
N.Y. Book Fair,
and the International Festival
of Latinoamerica Poetry.
New York City,
its walls & sidewalks vibrate
from the incessant rhythm
of feet & cars & trailers,
2-storied London buses,
horses, joggers, muggers,
sirens in heat
day & night,
thousands of yellow taxis,
green taxis, any color taxis,
garment trucks, garbage trucks,
limousines, parades, tap dancing,
any kind of dancing…
And millions of people,
charging, surging, thrusting
themselves into subways,
a gigantic, frantic, rush-hour
ride of the Valkiri!
MOUNT ST. MARY’S
Back in the ’90s I did two readings at Mt.
Mount St. Mary’s college; I wrote the
following for the second reading, back in ’95.
———————————————-
Discover the heavens
with Galilei…
Bask in the romance
of an Elizabeth Browning sonnet…
Or better yet,
listen to the rat-tat-tat
of drive-by poetry.
